Program Development Assistant

Universitas Papua through the Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (LPPM UNIPA) is leading leatherback turtle conservation in the Bird’s Head region of Papua, at the Jeen Womom Coastal Park, Tambrauw Regency, Papua Barat. Marine turtle population monitoring and nest protection are conducted at Jeen Yessa and Jeen Syuab beaches, which host the largest remaining nesting aggregation of Pacific leatherbacks. In addition to leatherbacks, olive ridleys, greens, and hawksbills also nest in those beaches. The LPPM UNIPA nesting beach team conducts monitoring for population status assessment and protects nests to increase hatchling production. In addition, the LPPM UNIPA is entrusted to help reestablish a leatherback conservation project at the Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea. The Huon Gulf provides critical nesting habitat for Pacific leatherbacks. Nesting primarily occurs between October and March and is spread over seven nesting beaches with a total length of 29 km. Daily surveys of leatherback nesting activity during October 2010 and March 2011 nesting season recorded a total of 527 nests (Pilcher, 2011). Unfortunately, a leatherback conservation project in this region ended in 2013 primarily because of funding. The LPPM UNIPA will work with local partners and communities to reestablish the project.
